Max’s Dinosaur Odyssey – Bringing Prehistoric Pages to Life
Situation
Butterfly Software was launching an immersive children’s storybook, Max’s Dinosaur Odyssey, which blended storytelling with augmented reality. The vision? To let young readers not just imagine dinosaurs—but see, hear, and experience them through their devices. This required hyper-realistic visuals and rich, immersive audio that could hold the attention of both kids and their parents.
The challenge:
Craft a seamless AR experience with lifelike dinosaur animation and cinematic sound that elevates the narrative beyond static pages—all while syncing to a beautifully written audiobook.
Task
Butterfly engaged 77 Productions to develop a full suite of creative assets for the project. Our scope included:
-
3D design, animation, and rendering of seven unique dinosaur species, each with their own behaviour and personality
-
Integration-ready assets for AR development, ensuring optimal performance across devices
-
Full voiceover casting, direction, and production for the audiobook narration
-
Cinematic, location-reactive sound design to enhance emotion, tension, and realism
The objective was to ensure children would feel immersed in the prehistoric world—from audio to animation—without breaking the magic of the book’s tactile charm.
Action
We approached the project like a film-meets-playground hybrid. Our creative and technical teams worked across animation, sound, and storytelling to make it roar:
3D Animation & Rendering
Each dinosaur was built from the fossil record up. We used custom rigging and lifelike texturing to model seven prehistoric creatures, from the gentle Brachiosaurus to the razor-quick Velociraptor. Animations were looped and optimised for real-time rendering, ensuring compatibility with AR across devices.
Sound Design & Audiobook
Working from the story script, we cast and recorded the narrator and dialogue, then layered bespoke sound design throughout the 3D environments. This included:
-
Ambient jungle atmospheres (buzzing insects, volcanic rumbles, rustling vines)
-
Realistic movement sounds: footsteps, splashes, crashing foliage
-
Tailored SFX for each dinosaur encounter (e.g., Spinosaurus fishing, T-Rex stomping)
-
Carefully layered breathing, wind, and tension tones for immersive storytelling
-
Naturalistic, processed vocalisations for each species—no stock libraries, all custom
We also provided a fully produced audiobook with character VO and seamless transitions, making it as engaging without visuals as it was with.
Result
The final experience brought Max’s Dinosaur Odyssey to life in a way that delighted young readers and amazed grown-up ones.
-
Seven fully rendered, animated dinosaurs now populate the AR world, interacting dynamically with the book’s printed pages
-
The custom audio mix added depth and tension, creating cinematic moments that rivalled big-budget children’s productions
-
The audiobook format stood on its own, offering an inclusive way for kids to engage with the story—even without the book or AR experience
-
Butterfly Software now has a flagship AR storytelling product that elevates the standard for educational publishing in Australia
The project has since become a benchmark in immersive storytelling, blending education and entertainment for a next-gen audience—and giving 77 Productions another beautifully wild feather in our creative cap.
