CASE STUDY: “A Colourful Dream” Experiential Video Production
SITUATION
THE LUME Melbourne, Australia’s first fully immersive digital art gallery commissioned 77 Productions to contribute to its flagship exhibition dedicated to the life and legacy of Vincent Van Gogh. The brief was ambitious: create a five-minute visual experience inspired by Van Gogh, without directly showing any of his artwork. The challenge was not only artistic but deeply conceptual—crafting an evocative narrative that could be projected across 150 screens in a 360° immersive environment, and resonate emotionally with thousands of daily visitors.
TASK
77 Productions, led by artist and animator Mark Patch, was tasked with designing and producing an original experiential video piece titled “A Colourful Dream.” The goal was to:

Convey the essence of Van Gogh’s artistic vision through abstract, emotional storytelling

Leverage advanced fluid simulations, 3D animation, and visual effects to mimic the creative process

Create a fully synchronised multi-sensory experience that aligned with a bespoke music score

Push the technical boundaries of large-format exhibition design using Grande 360 projection technology
ACTION
Inspired by the raw elements of artistic creation, we imagined a dream sequence in which Van Gogh mixes pigments and oils drawn from the earth—visualised through surreal, fluid simulations. The animation was crafted using a powerhouse toolkit:

Cinema 4D, X-Particles, RealFlow, Redshift, and After Effects for fluid dynamics and VFX

Visual metaphors inspired by Rorschach inkblots and apophenia, representing the mind’s creative chaos

A hypnotic visual choreography tied to the timing and emotion of the music score
The piece was produced over eight weeks of studio work and hundreds of additional personal hours. Every frame was designed to evoke emotion, colour, and imagination, allowing viewers to experience what it might feel like to be inside Van Gogh’s mind.
RESULT
“A Colourful Dream” became a standout centrepiece within THE LUME’s Van Gogh experience, delivering a visceral, emotional journey that captivated museum-goers. Visitors lingered, engaged, and often returned for multiple viewings—proof of the piece’s immersive power. For 77 Productions, the project reinforced its reputation as a leader in experiential storytelling, seamlessly blending art, technology, and emotion at scale.
